Cooking at a late winter camp-out

Thank you for stopping by the Arkansas Dutch Oven Society website.  The Arkansas Dutch Oven Society charter states that our purpose is to further the knowledge and heritage of Dutch oven cooking.  We do this by Dutch Oven Gatherings (DOGS), historic reenactments, and demonstrations.  We encourage you to join our group and take part in our activities and forum discussions.  It is our goal to promote the art of Dutch oven cooking in Arkansas and beyond.  If you know of any events in which Dutch oven cooking is featured, please let us know so that we can post it to the site and help get the word out about it.  It does not have to be a "cook-off", just anything connected with the "black pots."  Arkansas Dutch Oven Society has members all across the state of Arkansas and many of the surrounding states that are always looking for a DOG (Dutch Oven Gathering).

The meat for this dish is Red Hot Links, thus the firecracker name.

OK, it looks like spring may finally start to show itself.  WOW what a winter.  But with spring cleaning comes spring cooking. There is no better time of the year than spring to Dutch oven cook.

I have been to a couple cooking’s so far this year and as usual have had great times.  First The Redneck Gourmets annual winter camping trip that years ago started as a hunting weekend with a little cooking thrown in.  Now no one hunts and all we do is cook and sit by a campfire.  This year’s weather was perfect and we had way too much food.  11 people and 16 Dutch ovens for supper.  I hurt for a week after that one. LOL!  Then White oak Lake State Parks Dutch oven weekend.  They taught a Dutch oven 101 class (that was full) and had a cook-off going at the same time.  I got to meet some new people and saw some old friends as well.  We even let those Louisiana boys come across the state line again...but only for a short time!

The point is ...folks it is time to get those black pots out and get to using them.

Next month on the 17th, we will host a Dog and business meeting at the Plantation Agricultural Museum in Scott. It is located at 4815 Hway 161 South in Scott Ark.  The phone there is 501-961-1409.  This is only about 20 miles west of Little Rock so I hope a lot of you can make it. We will set up and cook starting about 10 am and plan on having the meal at 1pm. After we finish lunch, we will have a short business meeting. This is an ideal time to introduce someone new to Dutch ovens.  The cooking, meal and meeting will be open to all.  I am excited for a chance to meet some more new cooks and see familiar faces again. Hope to see you there!
