How many?

Just a question to get something started...How many pieces of cast iron do you have?  And what sizes.

I have 48 pieces of cast iron  rangeing from 1/2 pint Lodge serving bowls to the Cabelas 20" Dutch oven. My latest addition was a find at my local junk store was a 10' Spider.  When I spied it, I grabbed it with both hands so that no one else could get it.  Not that anyone was around but they were not going to get it.  and the best part was that it only coat $15 bucks.

Re: How many?
I've got 33, this week. I can't hardly pass them up either. I've only bought 5 brand new. Most of mine are skillets ( 5" to 12"), a couple of griddles, a muffin pan, a loaf pan, only four dutch ovens, two corn muffin pans, an interesting sauce pan (?) that is about 4" deep and 5" wide, and my favorite (this week) is an old hammered dutch oven (no legs). I bought it for $3 at a neighborhood yard sale. It was nasty and rusty as heck. I've washed, scrubbed, burned, greased and washed and scrubbed and greased and burned again. It's still not right. Hope I haven't ruined it some how. The iron has a reddish color running through it, not solid red, just splotches here and there. Kind of like swirls. I went ahead and cooked some beans in it a few weeks ago (not even intending on eating them, thank you) just to use it, but I just don't know what to do. I guess it looks good at any rate, even if it can't be used. Any thoughts or suggestions? I've got a muffin pan with those red streaks too, anybody know what that is all about?

I love finding cast iron, and how almost every piece has a story. Like the big 12" skillet that I got while working at TGI Fridays in Nashville. We had three of them in the kitchen that we cooked hash browns in for Sunday Brunch, and the Health Dept said we couldn't use them. Not sanitary. So we took them home! Then there's the Griswold griddle that my boyfriend's son rescued from a bunch of hoolagans that were fixing to shoot it to see if it would break. That's about the only decent thing that boy has done lately.

So when is our next gathering? It's getting colder. Are we gonna have to wait until Spring?

Re: How many?

Flap,  Try soaking the pot in a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water for a 1/2 day and see if it will take the red out.

Not sure when the next Dog will be, hunting season is here and a lot of people hunt on the weekends and the holidays are coming up so it looks like after the first of the year will be best but I am open to whatever.  A while back when I asked for suggestions for the next Dog , I got very little response.  I would sure like to here from some people as to where and when we could have the next dog.  And someone to step up and say they would be in charge of the details for the next one.  Here is a chance for someone to host  a dog in their area.

Re: How many?
Should have thought earlier about having a Deer Widow Dog! Maybe next year. I wouldn't mind putting a Dog together. Maybe most people don't go to this site and we need to do a mailing. Your absolutely right about deer season and the holidays.

Have you done this vinegar/water thing before? I heard that too much vinegar can do harm. I'm beginning to think this pot is made out of a different kind of iron, and that's why there is red streaked through it.
