| I am wanting to do a dutch oven cookoff, but i am wanting to know what is allowed to be pre-made. Example- Pie Dough. Does it need to be made on sight, premade, or the in the store dough. and can you pre-cook ground hambuger or anything. I am more than likely gong to be a one person team, so i am looking at how much prep i can do before a event and still have the time to take care of my cooking area. And any tips would be appricated. |

Lesia, I sure hope some others weigh in here because my experience with cook-offs is limited to my one effort. In that one the only things that could be pre-made/done was that you could soak your beans the night before. That is all. Everything else had to be done from scratch. This was about ten years ago. Although two of my best friends were also in the competition and had asked me to be on their team, I chose to go it alone. I will never do that again. In fact, that experience pretty much soured me on cook-offs all this time, and I am only now considering joining up with those same two friends and cooking again in competition. It was difficult to take care of my area, cook my food, and still be a sane person. I cooked beans, a soup/stew, biscuits, and a desert. Never again will I try to do something like this alone. I did well, second only to my friends, taking second in every category as well as overall, so it wasn't a bust. It was just too stressful to do alone.

Lesia, I make a lot of the cookoffs in Ark and everyone is pretty much the same. Most of them will allow "store bought" items like cake mixes and such. I have no ideal about pre browning ground meat but I would think that would be a no-no because that would be cooking rather than mixing. I do pre measure ingredients most of the time and that is acceptable normally. I would check with the contact person of the contest to make sure though. I will say this about using a mix, a scratch cake has a higher difficulty factor and that is alot of the times part of the judging criteria. best advice if you do one by yourself is to practice before hand exactly as you plan to do in the contest, work out how much time is needed for each dish and what you can be doing while one is cooking or rising. I have done an event with the help of my wife who on our very first date told me she did not cook (and she meant it). All she did was to hand me stuff and help me remove a cake from a DO so it can be done ...just manage your time closely.

| Thank you very much for the advice. I was thinking everythig needed to be made on site, and i was wondering about the stress of doing it yourself and keeping the area clean and neat. |
