Thank you for stopping by the Arkansas Dutch Oven Society website.  The Arkansas Dutch Oven Society charter states that our purpose is to further the knowledge and heritage of Dutch oven cooking.  We do this by Dutch Oven Gatherings (DOGS), historic reenactments, and demonstrations.  We encourage you to join our group and take part in our activities and forum discussions.  It is our goal to promote the art of Dutch oven cooking in Arkansas and beyond.  If you know of any events in which Dutch oven cooking is featured, please let us know so that we can post it to the site and help get the word out about it.  It does not have to be a "cook-off", just aything connected with the "black pots."  Arkansas Dutch Oven Society has members all across the state of Arkansas and many of the surrounding states that are always looking for a DOG (Dutch Oven Gathering).

Well I hope you are staying warm and dry.  It has really been a different weather year so far.  But the weather has shown us that our black pots can really come in handy.  I have talked to a couple of people that told me when they lost power, they just got out their Dutch ovens and never missed a meal.

Now that the holidays are over and everyone has lost that extra weight from eating too much from Thanksgiving to New Years, it is time to start thinking about new dishes to cook this year.  My cooking buddies and I get together one weekend every February at a deer lease and camp and cook.  We call this weekend our “Guinea Dog” because we have to cook something that we have never cooked before. So we serve each other as Guinea pigs. This year we will be cooking the weekend of the 19th so expect some pictures and stories after that.

I know it is still a little cool for a lot of people to be outside cooking but it is a great time to check out your iron and see if any of it needs to be reseasoned.  Doing that now will have your iron all shiny and black when it warms up and you think about cooking.

Now is the time that if your group or festival is planning a cooking event, you need to let us know.  A lot of people have already started planning where they will be cooking and you need to get on their calendar.   The first event that I am aware of is at White Oak Lake State Park near Camden in south Arkansas.  They will host a basic Dutch oven workshop for beginners on February 27th at 2 pm.  Cost is $30 but a new Dutch oven is yours after the workshop is over.  They are also hosting a 2 pot cook-off (main dish & desert) that same afternoon. Judging for the cook off will begin at 4pm.  For more info call Sarah Jones at 870-685-2748 or email sarah.k.jones@arkansas.gov.

I would really like to have a DOG in the central Arkansas area sometime this spring so we could have a business meeting.  If anyone is up to putting this together, please let me know.

Keep the coals hot!
